Thinking through

Enhance website UX for better user engagement

Assume you have a website, landing page, e-commerce site, or simply a blog. In either case, it serves a purpose, whether it is to sell a product, a service, or to get people to subscribe to your mailing list. However, things aren’t going as well as you had hoped.

What is User Experience?

“User experience (UX)”, focuses on a deep understanding of users, their needs, their value and their limitations. In short, it’s all about how we can give visitors the most meaningful and worthwhile experience possible.

A good user experience means:

  • The user visited your website
  • Scrolled through the different website pages
  • Understood what the website is all about, and
  • Finally, got what they wanted.

When a site is mobile-friendly, mobile searchers are more likely to use it and complete a purchase. According to a Google study, websites developed without the mobile consumer in mind, irritate consumers and increase their likelihood of leaving five-fold. Consumers are doing more on mobile devices, such as shopping and product research, and when they do, they look for content that meets their on-the-go needs.

According to a recent Google survey of mobile users, 72% of users believe it is vital for websites to be mobile-friendly, while 96% have visited a site that does not operate properly on their device and 79% stating they’ll go back to search and try to find another site that meets their needs. Unfortunately for e-commerce businesses, 61% stated they are inclined to abandon the site if it is not mobile-friendly.

So what user experience are consumers looking for in a website?

  • Site Speed: 5 seconds or less loading time
  • Big, easy to use mobile buttons
  • Does your content make their time spent on the website worthwhile?
  • Is your website easy to navigate?
  • Does your brand identity, content or service builds trust and belief of the user?

The following UX statistics highlight the importance of user experience design

  • The return of $100 (ROI = 9,900 percent) is achieved for each $1 invested in UX.
  • When images don’t load or take too long to load, 39% of people will stop engaging with the content.
  • According to 85% of adults, a company’s mobile website should be as excellent as or better than its desktop website.
  • After a negative user experience, 88% of users are less likely to return to a website.
  • If a website isn’t mobile-friendly, mobile users are 5 times more likely to quit a task.
  • When a website takes longer than 3 seconds to load, 40% of visitors abandon it.
  • 70% of people glance at bulleted lists. The percentage of people who look at lists without bullet points is 55%.

The bottom line of these UX statistics is that businesses should spend money and time on user experience design.
